The Dell 1815dn doesn't quite earn an Editors' Choice, but if I didn't care a lot about photo quality and could set up all its features without needing instructions, it's the monochrome AIO I'd most like to have in my small office.

Photos are a touch below newspaper quality, and I noticed obvious posterization plus an overall darkening that caused loss of detail in even moderately dark areas. I'd hesitate to hand this printer's graphic output to an important client, however, because of posterization, with shading changing suddenly where it should change gradually, and dithering, showing as patterns in what should be solid shades of gray. Graphics were outstanding for a monochrome laser, fine for any internal business use. Several were legible at 4 points too, and only one highly stylized font with thick strokes needed to be printed at a larger 10-point size. It shows well-formed characters, and all but one of our test fonts was easily readable at 5 points.

The 1815dn's output quality is also a plus, at least for text and graphics. To find a faster printer, you'd have to spend $500 on the Editors' Choice Brother MFC-8860DN, with its swift 6:30 time. The 1815dn's total time on our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software, was 7 minutes 55 seconds. But at 38.5 pounds, it's not too hard for one person to move into place. The 1815dn is really too big for my desk. An automatic document feeder with a 50-page capacity sits in the scanner cover. But just in case, you can also add an optional 250-sheet tray ($100 direct) for a maximum 550 sheets.ДЄll of these features are packed into a relatively small AIO, at 18 by 17.7 by 17.2-inches (HWD), that consists of a flatbed scanner mounted on a laser printer. The 300-sheet paper capacity should be enough for a typical small office and easily sufficient for home-office use. The 1815dn's paper-handling features are impressive for a printer at this price, with a duplexer for printing on both sides of a page, a 250-sheet paper tray, and a 50-sheet multipurpose tray coming as standard.

Dell says an updated manual with the password information is now shipping with the printer and is available for download. To Dell's credit, once I pointed out this oversight the company immediately started making plans to fix the problem. The problem is that Dell has somehow managed to leave the instructions out altogether-including, for example, the user name and password you need for the pages that let you enter the setup information. The instructions aren't hard to follow, either. Just use your browser to go to the AIO's built-in Web server, and work your way through the appropriate pages. It's not that the setup itself is hard it's not.

Unfortunately, both the e-mail and fax forwarding features are much harder to set up than they should be.

Better still, you can forward incoming faxes, outgoing faxes, or both.
